J.P. McLaughlin

Born in Rottenrow, Glasgow in 1959. When Glasgow and the West Coast of Scotland still had an industrial base meant spending childhood surrounded by people working in industry and that gives a very solid grounding for life.

You tend to look at things in a very definite way, black is black, etc..

This attitude is carried into art when you are told things have to be portrayed in a very definite way you are discouraged from looking at art in any way that might be unrealistic and it was only when Joe broke away from this line of thinking that his work started to take on a life of its own.

Joe has always been enthusiastic about experimenting with different mediums, creating images rather than just representing what he sees, even though realism was a starting point. He believes you have to evolve as a painter otherwise you stagnate.

The never-ending quest to improve and to capture something more on canvas than a pleasing scene is the powerful driving force that keeps his work evolving.
